Brean Sands Leisure Park - 4th August 2004

This is mine and my daughter Lauren's account of the day at Brean Leisure Park for the Popstars in the Park event which took place on Wednesday August 4th.

We arrived at the Leisure Park around 2pm and quickly found the place to queue after asking a security guy. He looked at as as if we were mad when we said we were going to start queuing as the gates weren't due to open until 5pm. Luckily there were only around eight people in front of us after our nearly four hour drive to get there.

We met with a lady called Tina, from the unofficial forums and her son, Michael. To pass some of the time queuing Lauren and Michael
wandered around the rides at the park, and saw some of Peter's sound check, standing on a park bench peering
over a fence. Tina and I stayed in the queue and Chris and the band walked past and waved.

Peter and Katie spent some time in the park, particularly enjoying the dodgems.

Gates were due to open around 5pm and although they were running a bit late the wait wasn't too bad. As we were let through a man on the stage kept saying DO NOT RUN so we walked very quickly, I might add barefoot over the gravel, as I thought I would lose my flip flops and secured a place at the front, where we sat down and waited for the place to fill up and the show to begin. Quite a few people attempted to run but were pulled up by the stewards, and some even fell over in the rush!

I can't remember the times but the show was due to start around 7pm and I think it was fairly on time. A man (like a Butlins entertainer) came out with 3 pigs! They sang and danced their way through 'Agadoo', 'Superman' and 'Purple People Eater' encouraging the crowd to take part - very difficult in around 2 square inches of space!!

Next up were a new band called THE NOISE. They did around 5 or 6 songs and were a 4 piece band that did rock/pop music. I wasn't that keen on them but Lauren liked them.

Next were D-Side, the group that we have met loads of times and are 5 Irish lads that are really lovely. We had seen them a few weeks earlier and some of the band instantly recognised us. Their set consisted of 'Pushin' Me Out', 'Invisible', 'Real World', 'Here I Stand' 'I'd be Lyin'' and 'Fix Me'. We had lots of smiles and winks from the boys and at one point Dane pointed at me while singing. (He's my fave!).

Lauren was playing with them before they came on stage as we could see them behind the curtain as they peeped out and Ryan took a photo of us,

especially Lauren as she was waving to him. Their performance was really good and the crowd seemed to really enjoy them despite a lot of them having never heard of them before. They performed all their songs with their usual dance routines, some quite sexily with the microphone stands!

A bit of a gap followed before Jason Donovan took to the stage - a much longer gap than planned. Personally I think Jason Donovan had a bit of stage fright, the crowd were chanting 'Jason, Jason, Jason'. When he finally came out he was clutching a couple of beer bottles! He was wearing a blazer with a Blue Peter badge on it, and jeans - which I have to add, had the flies undone! He opened with "And Dream Will Do' and had all the crowd singing along and also realised he had to do up his trousers at this point. Poor thing - we felt really sorry for him but were pleasantly surprised to hear that he hadn't lost his voice. He looked petrified and managed to spill his beer all over the stage.

He had a guitarist come on to do a song which was a new one. He also did 'Too Many Broken Hearts' and some other old favourites including the theme tune to 'Home & Away'! Did he forget what Aussie soap he used to be in? A notable part of the set was where he started chanting 'Jason, Jason, Jason' and took off his blazer and pulled his top up to reveal his body!!

It seemed like the beer had, had an effect on him! He jumped down into the crowd for the last song and was clearly loving every moment of the screaming women trying to touch a bit of him!
The only disappointment was that he didn't do 'Especially for You' , which was a hit for him and Kylie Minogue.

Around a half hour break followed, maybe a bit longer while the stage was set up and prepared for Peter Andre and his band. Spilt beer had to be cleared up and bits moved off the stage. Thanks to Merv and his torch it was soon made safe for Peter.

He opened the set with his usual start of 'Flava' and went through the set list from previous shows. This one included the Michael Jackson song 'Shake Your Body', where he borrowed someone from the crowds hat and wore it Michael Jackson style while he was dancing and The Eagles 'Hotel California'. At this show 'Never Gonna Give You Up' was dropped probably due to safety as there was a lot of pushing and fighting going on before he came out, and one woman was dragged off by security after being wrestled to the ground!

Pete seemed to really enjoy doing this show with the theme park all lit up to the side of us. Katie was watching from just behind the curtain with Harvey in her arms. His brother Michael was also there. Peter waved to the people on the big wheel who had a perfect birds eye view of the stage. He was also enjoying reading the banners that people had made for him. In particular he liked one that said "Who needs Ricky Martin" and he pointed it out to brother, Chris.

Peter did an acoustic version of The Eagles 'Hotel California' with the rest of the band on stools at the front of the stage and his brother Chris also shared the vocals with him.

Doing a Michael Jackson impersonation

When it was time for him to do the Michael Jackson song 'Shake Your Body (down to the ground), he looked out into the crowd and spotted someone wearing a trilby style hat. He asked if he could have it for a while and the hat slowly got passed forward after establishing which person he was talking to!

He placed the hat on, just like how Michael Jackson wore his and did some fantastic MJ dancing as he sang.

For Mysterious Girl he bought Katie and Harvey out onto the stage, he gave her a stool in the middle of the stage to sit on while he sang the song to her. After a while he took her hand and led her to the edges of the stage to wave to people. He made a real fuss of Harvey, and took him into his arms and carried him proudly to the front of the stage which was met with screaming approval from the crowd. Harvey seemed completely happy with him and Katie looked on proudly. While she was sat on the stool she seemed to be quite shy and not completely at ease with being made the centre of attention.

All too soon the show came to an end, and as at other shows Peter closed with 'Insania' wearing his jungle clothes.

At the side of the stage behind the speakers we could see Merv and the other crew members wearing pink light up bunny ears and dancing away, it was so funny. And then Peter put some on and also put them on Chris while he was playing guitar.

The show seemed very light hearted and relaxed and this seemed to reflect in Peter's performance which
was fantastic. This has been one of my favourite shows from the tour.

After Peter left the stage a fireworks display started to finish off a great evenings entertainment. Now we
only had to do a four hour drive back home.....
