Butlins Bognor Regis - July 16th 2005

Peter was booked to top the bill at the Butlins Chartbusters Weekend.

I was lucky, along with Lili from the official forums, to be invited to this show as day visitors otherwise we would not have been there. I decided to take my youngest son, Lucas, with us as he was so disappointed when the tour was cancelled and he couldn't come to club dates with me. He was very happy when we told him that morning where he was going.

We arrived at Butlins, Bognor Regis around lunchtime after a hot drive down and drove round to the Day Visitors gate where we gave our details (a few minor hiccups here!) and were then shown into the carpark. We found a parking space which just so happened to be very close to where Peter would later be parking! We sorted out some lunch to take with us, put plenty of sun cream on Lucas and off we went to see what Butlins Bognor Regis was all about.

First impression was it wasn't as busy as I expected and was rather more basic than I thought it would be, oh and of course too many children! We walked around the central area, Lucas wanting one of everything he saw and then found our way to where Peter would be performing..... brief silly moment when we thought he was going to be on the little stage where the children's entertainer was! A small white one that at that moment had a clown singing on it.

Right by the side of an amusement arcade was a door - labelled Main Stage - this was the place we needed to be at. We recognised a few people there from the Official Forums and said hello and generally passed a few hours with amusing Lucas, him spending all my loose change in the Arcade and chatting to Cheryl and Sarah. All in all time passed quite quickly and Lucas was not too impatient. The Redcoats were now trying to make sure the queue was organised and I asked them to make sure the people behind us didn't run and crush Lucas on the way to the stage area.

Big thanks to them for holding everyone back for those vital minutes to allow me to get him there safely.

We took our seats along the front, to the side of the stage and had about an hour to wait. Lucas spotted the light sticks and we got him one of those. The Redcoats were playing typical cheesy poppy holiday camp music, like S CLub 7 and Britney Spears - Lucas and the other kids did a conga style dance around the hall that we were in.

At approx 4.10pm the lights went down, music started and Peter appeared on the stage. It was a weird atmosphere as 99% of the people in there remained seated at their tables. We couldn't stand as being at the front would have meant blocking all the other people.

Peter was wearing his jeans and a green sleeveless zipped up top. He wasted no time in showing us how it was 'blinged up' with all his sequins/stones that he and Kate had done.

He opened the set with a new unreleased song that we have heard several times at the club shows called 'Go'. This has a sample of 'Flava' in and the audience livened up a bit at hearing this.

Dancing
This was followed by another new one that none of us had heard before called 'Drunk On Love', Peter explained what the title meant and also introduced his brother Chris, after explaining that it was meant to be a full band there but due to circumstance it was just him and brother Chris.

People in the crowd were requesting 'Mysterious Girl' but Peter was joking around that if he did that now then everyone would leave. Some were also shouting 'Off, off' meaning for him to take his top off, but he pretended they meant he was to leave the stage.

In the middle of the set was a lovely acoustic section where he brought his brother to the front of the stage on a stool beside him and they performed 'Ain't No Sunshine' and the Eagles classic, 'Hotel Califiornia'.

Listen to 'Ain't No Sunshine'

Peter looked on proudly and really seems to enjoy watching Chris do his solo on the guitar. There was a lot of admiration for Chris from the audience, people who perhaps hadn't seen him before.

A quieter moment
Peter finished the show with his summertime song - 'Mysterious Girl' and for this one the largely seated audience took to their feet to sing and dance.

The hour and a bit that Peter was on stage was all too soon over and he was gone. People seemed surprised at the show and I think Peter gained quite a few fans and admirers that day.
