Chicago Rock Cafe - 25th May 2005

This review is from Caroline (Cazza) on the forums.

For this performance I was a little more prepared. I had my maps ready and waiting and had arranged to meet Debs and Lili there. Once there I waited for the them to arrive and directed them into the car park. Chelmsford town centre is complicated! We made our way to Chicago Rock Cafe. It looked very different to the Braintree one. A lot smaller from the outside.

Once inside I have to say it was again like Braintree jam packed. Chelmsford had the bar at the front in front of the stage. Thought this strange and spend around 2 hours taking money and passing drinks back to the crowd behind so to keep our spot.

On this particular evening there was a certain lady who managed to wriggle her way to the front about 20 minutes before he came on stage and being a lot bigger than me pushed me out of the way. Lindsay, Debs and I spent the rest of the night wrestling for breathing space! I am sure if the lady reads this she will know exactly who she is!! As we had been there all evening I personally found this rather cheeky. But never mind!

When Peter came on it was fantastic. He came on to ‘Go’. I never tire of hearing this. It is a real crowd pleaser and it is fantastic for people that aren’t necessarily big fans to hear a track that shows a different side to his music and not just the now commercialised Mysterious Girl and Insania.

Before he introduced the next track he told the crowd that his brother-in-law Danny had accompanied him and was in the DJ box in a pink shirt. Everyone looked over to where he was. Second track was Ooh La La La. It is a good track because the fans know it from The Long Road Back and some of the crowd know it from when Cool and The Gang originally did it. Peter does it complete justice and it is so summery and as it was a really hot night was very apt.

Peter shows us that his trousers are not undone
A part of Peter’s PA’s I really enjoy is when he talks to the crowd in between songs. It makes that connection with the audience and makes it more personal. One of my fave moments is when Peter introduces Insania and he never fails to mention Katie at some point. Makes me and everyone go‘aaaawww’ Insania still has me Doo-doo-doing. And it makes me smile to hear the crowd singing it. Everyone knows it and sings it to their loudest.

By this point Peter was struggling with the DJ who seemed incapable of playing a CD!! He had started Mysterious Girl too early and then started to play Insania again!!! Peter was getting rather exasperated but he covered it well by giving us a treat of an accapelo version of ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ while the DJ sorted himself out! Thanks Mr DJ!!!! That was a unexpected treat.

On this particular night Mysterious Girl has to be my favourite one because half way through Peter said ‘Hi Lindsay’.

At this the pusher who had been causing us breathing problems turned round and she looked like she had been slapped with a wet fish!!! Hahah!!! Serves her right for pushing to the front and standing there not knowing any of the words! Thanks Peter!

Peter says hello

Peter was feeling rather adventurous this evening and decided to get closer to the crowd and walk down the banister on the stairs and walk along the bar. I was quite scared for his safety. Especially as he nearly got pulled into the crowd but he loved it! Once Mysterious Girl he thanked the crowd and made his exit.
We hung around for a bit and saw Danny leave the club to get the car. Think Peter disappeared quickly due to Katie at this time being heavily pregnant.

We didn’t mind it had been a lovely evening and I had enjoyed having a laugh with Debs and Lindsay. Funniest moment and as I am laughing writing this, has to be when we went back to the multi-storey car park and Debs couldn’t find the exit on one of the levels. I remember sitting there at the exit laughing so hard my stomach hurt! That topped my night off (sorry Debs!) To be fair she had a hire car and we were somewhere we didn’t know!!!

Anyway it was another brilliant PA and I hope there are more to come in the future.

What is he thinking of?!!!
