Charter Hall - 19th June 2004 - Matinee

This date was added as the evening show sold out so quickly. Unfortunately Charter Hall in Colchester, Essex was not filled to capacity but everyone there was determined to have a good time. It is quite a small hall holding approximately 1200 people.

The stage set was quite simple comparing it to the big arena tours I have been to – it had platforms behind the main front area, which were raised around a step high. These had blue tube lights running along the front of them and the backdrop was like a large camouflage net with leaves on.

The show was scheduled to start at 4pm and just after then an announcement was made to say that Twen2y 4 Se7en would be on stage. They are a rock/pop boy band with four members named Niall, Andy, Thom and Radon. They all played guitars apart from Andy and they liked their body image with Niall and Thom walking on with open shirts and Niall dancing like Peter Andre in the 'Mysterious Girl' video holding his shirt open!

They played a set of four songs starting with ‘I Don’t Mind’, then ‘Where You Are’ which is their new single out in August, followed by ‘American Girls (which will be on the next series of The OC) and they closed with their latest single ‘Hide’. They were liked by the crowd and got a great reception. They have also recently supported Westlife on their tour.

Next on the stage were Shakaya, two girls from Cairns in Australia called Simone Stacey and Naomi Wenatong. They have already had platinum sales in Australia and are hoping for the same here in the UK .They are an R & B/MC act. They did a set of four songs including their big Australian hits ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Stop Calling Me’. They were also the backing vocals for Peter Andre.

We then had a twenty minute interval before Peter was due on stage. A lot of people left the hall for refreshments. Then the lights dimmed down and the music started, along with the screams. The atmosphere was already very good and chants started up of ‘Peter, Peter, Peter’. First of all his band came out, which included his brother Chris and Shakaya. It was at this point that I realised my camera was completely dead so all pictures for this show are provided courtesy of Sara Emerson. Special thanks to her.

What seemed like ages and was only probably only seconds passed and Peter came running onto the stage from the left behind the speakers. He was wearing a white sleeveless top with Sixers 24 on the front and white combat trousers. Everyone was out of their seats and rushing to the front and singing and clapping and SCREAMING!!!!

He opened with his old hits 'Flava' - 'Party All Night' and then a song from the new album 'Ooh La La La'. He said he did it for the album as it is one of his favourite songs and he loves Kool & the Gang. He talked quite a bit before songs and told us where they reached in charts and what year.
Peter opens at Colchester with Flava ...
and continues with Oooh La La La

He then talked to the audience about the new album and asked if anyone had got it. Lot of people said yes but I’m not sure whether they had as they didn’t know the songs. He said he was going to get someone up to do a duet with him and if they came up they had to know the words. He didn’t say which song it would be but sent 'Big Chris’ (security) out to find someone.

A young girl of approximately 12/13 was taken up to the stage and he sat her on a stool in the middle and asked her name which I didn’t catch and asked if she would sing – she said no, so he said he would sing it to her instead.

The song was ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ and it must have been a wonderful moment for the girl but she was really embarrassed and kept putting her hand over her face. Peter held her hand and took her to the sides of the stage and was dancing to her as well as singing and he got down on his knees for part of it as he was singing. When the song ended he gave her a kiss and hug and she was returned to the audience. Her friends then shouted out that it was her birthday.

The show then slowed down again and Peter introduced his brother Chris to the crowd and showed off his shaved football haircut. He said he would introduce the rest of the band later. All the four members of the band sat on stools with guitars with Peter in the middle and Peter asked who liked The Eagles. He explained that they were going to do a special version of 'Hotel California' which he loved.

Peter opened the singing of it as the others played the guitars but Chris stood out. He then sang some of the song – his voice is deeper and more husky than Peter’s but still good.

A little further into the song and Peter got up and left the stage while Chris did a guitar solo which was so powerful and you couldn’t help but watch him. He really is a fantastic musician and Peter is so obviously very proud of him. The solo lasted for quite a while and then Peter came back on for the last verse in change of clothes. He was wearing a silvery coloured tracksuit style outfit with the zipper on the top pulled down quite low.

The musicians then go back to their usual instruments and Peter introduces 'Lonely' – for me this was great as it is probably my favourite old song of his.

'Natural' is next on the set list and he says he is going to perform it the old way and asks us if we want to see some dancing. Obviously we did!! Peter said look out for The Hangman move and demonstrated it.

His dancing was amazing - he definitely hasn’t lost his old touch! It was very enjoyable to watch and Peter seemed to be enjoying himself too.

After 'Natural' Peter talks quite a lot about his musical influences and in particular Michael Jackson. He explains that there are two sides to Michael Jackson – little Michael that was in the Jackson 5 and he gives a demonstration of Michael then with a dance move and he sang a little bit of 'She’s Out Of My Life' with no instruments, to a big cheer. He then goes on to say that there is the more aggressive style of Michael Jackson and again does a dance move with sound effects and ends it with grabbing his crotch – Michael style! He says he prefers little Michael and performs 'Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)' and he asks if he can do some Michael dancing during it.

The dance moves were very good and I think Michael Jackson himself would have been impressed! It was a great lively song which had all the audience dancing and singing along to.

At the end of this he introduced the band…

Keyboard– Mike Bramwell
Keyboards, guitar and vocals- David Whitmey
Guitar and vocals - Chris Andre (who he introduced properly before)
Rhythm section - Alex Toff
Bass Guitar and programming – Mike Choi
Backing – Shakaya
Each artist demonstrated their instrument and then they all got together for a finale of
'Shake Your Body'.
At this point Peter said thankyou to everyone and goodnight.

Around five minutes later the band came back out closely followed by Peter in a yellow t-shirt and jeans. He sang 'Untouchable', half of it while sitting on a stool in the centre of the stage.

He then talks about going in the jungle and coming out and we (the British public) welcoming him back and putting him in the Guinness Book of Records for being the only artist to have a hit three times with the same songs and he thanked us. There was bird song and thunder sound effects while he was talking. The biggest moment of the show now – 'Mysterious Girl'…I don’t think there was one person in the hall that wasn’t standing up and singing along, swaying arms.

The sound was deafening but fantastic!

He then goes off again and comes back in his IACGMOOH red fleece waistcoat and hat. He talks about the critics and the jungle and how bored he was and how would he survive two weeks in there.

‘Johnny Rotton was asleep, Mike Read was asleep and my little Katie Price was being horrible to me so what did I do?'

The crowd already had started do, do, do, do doing and he smiled and said we already made it a hit before it was a hit! He asked for us all the help him with the do, do, do’s and of course we obliged! Before he started singing 'Insania' he asked the crowd if he could see whether they were ‘insane’ or ‘insania’, explaining that ‘insane’ was just being loud but ‘insania’ was raising the roof.

He soon got the whole of the Charter Hall trying to sing ‘Do do do do do …’ as loud as they could. After about three attempts he decided we were ‘insania’. During the song he changed the words from 'This is Insania' to 'You’re All Insania'.

A great end to a great show! All too soon it was over and Peter had left the stage along with his band. But he left a very happy and satisfied crowd who most certainly would welcome him back any day.

Do do do do do this is Insania!
