IT'S ALL GONE INSANIA - London goes crazy for Peter Andre

Parts of this article taken from Popworld.

Six years away from the charts is a long time for a pop icon. Tastes change, fans move on and there's a never-ending queue of new buff babes ready to claim the affections of girls around the globe. If you are to embark on the comeback trial, you better be certain the fans want you to return. In fact, you better be certain the fans actually remember you!

Well thanks to a certain jungle-based reality TV show, 90's heartthrob Peter Andre has been thrust to the forefront of the nations minds. Last week he took a massive gamble on whether pop fans really did want him back with a signing session and performance of his most well-known hit, Mysterious Girl at HMV on London's Oxford Street. it paid off - Peter is now number one again.

Peter is not scheduled to be on stage until 6pm, but at 1.30 Popworld get a call from his record company to report at the security doors at the side of HMV at 5.30 at the latest as there are already big queues forming and they want to make sure everything is in place for Pete's performance. At 5.10 Popworld arrive to find a normal looking HMV open for business as usual and wondering where all the fans were. They check with the security guard to be reminded of the side door entrance, so off they go slightly bemused by the lack of Andre supporters.

That is until they find the security door where queued up along the side of HMV must be at least 250 fans, most clutching their Mysterious Girl singles to be signed and chattering about what they will say to Peter. Popworld are allowed inside where they find a specially constructed stage, photographers and journalists, meaning the return of Andre has caused a media buzz.

As Popworld and media wait for the star's arrival, the security team start setting up barriers at the end of the stores aisles. When they are all in place the fans are let in to be shepherded into aisles (web designer comment: not a fair way of doing it as those of us that were in the queue first were pushed into the side aisle and those that arrived after us got the good position in the middle at the front). Screams and shouts for Peter go up, but it looks like the singer is going to make his adoring public wait a little longer. At 6pm a side door opens, a huge roar erupts and we are greeted by.....one of the events organisers.

At 6.20pm Peter strides onto stage to a massive ovation and hundreds of camera flashes. The screams are deafening, on a level normally reserved for the popular boybands like Westlife, and Peter actually looks a little nervous. He seems almost taken aback at the welcome, thinking is all this for him? It certainly is - the cameras keep flashing and its a couple of minutes before the snappers have calmed down and let Peter take the microphone for what we have all been waiting for.

"How are ya?" are Peter's first words to the crowd. "I'd just like to thank you all for coming down and I want you to sing along to this." And then 'Mysterious Girl' blasts out of the speakers - perhaps too loud as Peter signals lower with his hand. Everyone joins in with singing with Peter who has insisted on singing live this afternoon. As Popworld look around the store it's as if he has never been away.

After the performance the stage is set up for the autograph session. Peter has vowed to sign every single photo, cd, whatever.

It's a pretty bold statement as there are hundreds and hundreds of people wanting to step up and meet him. As the first girls go up massive screams erupt when Peter treats them to a kiss each. And Peter true to his word didn't call it quits after half an hour and rush off somewhere else, he was still signing and kissing past 8pm. "I just can't believe the response of the fans," says Peter. "They've all been fantastic. I really can't believe it."

Our experience at the signing.

My daughter and my experience at the signing: We arrived at HMV at around 3.45 to find approximately 40 people already in the queue. Everyone was being really patient and friendly and we chatted to a girl called Melissa, who like my daughter had liked Peter from the first time around. At around 5.50 we were let in through the side doors and to our disappointment were about a third of the way down the first aisle - although we had been queuing for two hours the people behind us were going to get a better position for the performance although we would get to meet him first.

Peter came out after what seemed like ages and was instantly greeted by screams and photographers who all wanted the best pictures of him. The photo session took around ten minutes and then Peter greeted us with a "How are ya?", which was met with even more screams! "I'm going to sing the song you all came here to hear" he says to the crowd and then makes a reference to the joke - 'here to hear'. Peter then sang Mysterious Girl which was fantastic and everyone sang along with him.

We were around the 50th people to meet Peter, first Melissa went up to him and got a big hug and told him "I love you". Next my daughter saw him and came out with "You are so gorgeous!"  Pete looked at her, smiled and then looked down a bit embarrassed. (It's the way she said it and the way Peter just looked at her! At home we all laugh at the things she comes out with!) Peter signed her CD and then posed for the photo above with her. Then my turn and I chatted to him about this website and had my pictures signed and then got a lovely hug and photo.

Reluctantly we left the stage, and the store, chatting about it with our new found friends, to start on our two hour journey back home, with our memories of a great afternoon.
