Whitbread Hop Farm - 23rd May 2004

The party took place at the Whitbread Hop Farm in Paddock Wood, Kent on a lovely hot and sunny day. The crowds started to build up long before the gates were due to open at 10am, with everyone hoping to secure a good position in front of the stage. When the gates finally opened there was a mad dash across the incredibly bumpy and uneven field towards the stage. We were lucky and got to the centre front. A long two hour wait was now upon us until the start of the show. We sat on the grass in the sunshine talking to the people around us to pass the time, applying the sun cream, and eating lunch. Everyone was obviously there for different acts, but Peter Andre was a popular choice, and the teenage girls were out in force for McFly, waving their Busted and McFly flags enthusiastically.

Insania time

The show opened with the Invicta FM DJ's coming onto stage, all dressed in bright orange boiler suits! The first ones were from the Morning Zoo Breakfast Show. They introduced the opening act which was D-Side. I have seen them as a support act before for Blue at Wembley and they give a good performance with lots of dancing.

They are five young lads from Ireland - Shane, Dane, Ryan, Damien and Derek. They sang 'Invisible', 'I'd be Lyin', and their new single 'Pushin' Me out' which is released next week. They did not disappoint with their performance and quickly left the Hop Farm to take part in a charity football match.

The next acts were: Alex Cartana and 5th Avenue, who unfortunately had a problem with the sound whilst performing their soon to be released single 'Spanish Eyes'. The sound completely went off and there were a few awkward moments for them as they didn't know what to do. Just as they were leaving the stage the sound was restored so they continued and re-did the song.

I'm not sure of the running order of these bands but we had Natasha Bedingfield, who was finding the crowd hard work to get going, Bellefire and Phixx. Phixx were excellent and opened their set with their new single 'Wild Boys' which sent the crowd wild. They did also did 'Love Revolution' and their debut single 'Hold On Me'.

Again, probably not in the right order, the middle section of acts were: Deepest Blue, Jamelia, new boy band V, and Mark Owen, who in particular was very good.

Time to get on stage
He came out dressed in white shirt and trousers with a black hat. It surprised me how tiny he is! He sang a set of three songs as well, including 'Four Minute Warning' and his new single, 'Makin' Out'. For this one he tried to encourage all couples to kiss for the whole song and make a new record. The crowd seemed to like him, and he got everyone doing a mexican wave. He was top of the 'vote for act of the day' from the voting listeners On the Invicta FM Website.
Things were beginning to hot up, not only in temperature! Mark Owen left the crowd happy and wanting more - next on stage were the band that all the teenage girls had come to see - McFly. They are a very young four piece band who were recently number one with 'Five colours in her hair'. They play their own instruments and are heavily influenced by the 60's sound. They played a four song set, which was, 'That Girl', their new single 'Obviously', 'Five colours in her hair' and 'Room on the third floor'. My daughter is a big McFly fan and was not left disappointed by their performance.
Peter acknowledges the crowd

I don't think they have the best live voices but what they lacked in vocal strength they more than made up for in entertainment and performance. Dougie Poynter the 16 year old bass player ran, jumped and whirled around on stage - it's a wonder he managed to stay on his feet! At the end of their set, Harry Judd, the drummer threw his drumsticks into the crowd.

Next up was what was in my opinion act of the day and the person I had in particular come to see - Peter Andre! The DJ's announced him and the crowd screamed! Apparently Peter got the loudest screams of the day. He came out wearing a sleeveless hooded top with a front zip, undone to his chest.

He is Insania!

He opened with 'Mysterious Girl' and all the crowd were singing and dancing along to this great summer song, very apt for the day. During the song Peter made reference to what a lovely day it was and at the end he explained that he took a break, which he intended to only be for three months but it turned into six years. He seemed very happy to be back on the stage and said he forgot how good English road shows were.

Next he sang a cover version of Kool & The Gangs 'Ooh La La La', which is on Peter's new album out on June 7th, titled The Long Road Back. He said it was a favourite of his and he recorded it for fun.

At the end of this song Peter spotted someone's banner which said 'show us your 6-pack'... he explained that it is no longer a 6-pack and is nearly four but he is working on it and enjoying life at the moment. The crowd started to shout 'off, off, off' and Peter questioned whether we meant his top or for him to go!

He undid the zipper a little way and showed part of his chest which got even more screams!

He then went on to ask if anyone watched 'I'm a Celebrity' and said that a song came in his head.....
...to which the crowd started 'do do do do do, .....this is Insania!' Peter loved it! He said it was amazing how people all knew the song before he had even recorded it.

He had a slight problem where the music was wrong at the start but he just made a joke about going, and then they got it right. He performed 'Insania' and then it was over. All too quickly.

The radio DJ's later said that they thought 'Ooh La La La' was the performance of the day.

Welcome back Peter!

Emma Bunton was next on and by now the show was really going well. McFly bought the tempo and atmosphere right up and Peter didn't let it drop, if anything he built on it. Emma Bunton sang two of her well known songs and her new one, 'Crickets sing for Ana Maria'. She had some male dancers on stage with her, which pleased the women in the crowd!

The headline act of the show was Ronan Keating. Although he did a great performance I would have rather he had done some more up tempo numbers.

Press photos
He did a set of five or six numbers and they were all the slow ones until the end one. He performed his new single, 'Last thing on my mind' that is recorded with LeAnn Rimes. He said that he had just spoke to her on the phone and she wanted him to perform it today. At one point he jumped down in the crowd and walked along touching all the outstretched hands.
He closed the show with 'Rollercoaster' which is one of my favourites of his, and it seemed like a good number to end it all on.

All in all, a fantastic day. The artists were all great and some really special performances. But the biggest cheer of the day for me was for Peter Andre. I think a lot of people wanted to not like him, maybe opinions swayed by what they had heard from the press, but he won a lot of people over today.

Well done to everyone, Invicta FM for hosting the show, the Whitbread Hopfarm for the venue, all the artists for their performances and most of all to Peter Andre! Finally back where he belongs!
