Corby Race Circuit - 4th July 2004

This is a write up of the day at Rockingham. It has been done by my daughter Lauren.

We set off for Rockingham at about nine-thirty to start the long journey to Rockingham Motor Racing Track as it is over one hundred and fifty miles away. We had a successful journey with no hitches and arrived at about eleven-forty five. After parking the car we spotted the stage in the distance but the area was fenced off, so to kill time we went to buy a programme, walk around the race circuit and watch the car racing start.

We then walked through the funfair having a look at various rides and stands. It was then that we saw that some people had started to queue to go in for the concert. So we went over and joined them, being the second lot of people to get there. By this time it was about 12.15, despite the main concert starting at 4.30pm.

We were told we would be let in at two o’clock . While waiting we saw FreeFaller walk past, wave and head off for the funfair and racing area. Because they are sort of unknown, barring one member – Ollie – they were able to walk around without getting hassle. So two o’clock came…and went and by now everyone queuing was now squashing up and pushing to get to the front of the queue. Security kept saying ‘Not much longer’ but there wasn't a reason given for the delay, so they tried their best at amusing us by telling awful jokes!. It then started to rain…hard! A lot of people didn’t have jackets or umbrellas so they got soaked. We didn’t have an umbrella but we had jackets and caps so we stayed relatively dry.

We stood there for a while longer, when the first seven people were allowed forward. However they stopped halfway to the pit. Fifteen minutes later we were allowed to make our way to the pit and everyone started going too. When we got past the barrier, we ran into the pit and managed to get right at the front on the barrier. By this time it was about approaching four o’clock , so we were nearly two hours late to get in.

Around 4.30pm, a man came on stage, trying to make everyone ‘make some noise’. He was evidently the presenter of the concert. He gave a list of the acts including Lemar, FreeFaller, Jamelia and The Cheeky Girls. At the mention of the Cheeky Girls everyone started booing. The presenter tried to get people to cheer for them by saying things like ‘Don’t be like that!’ and ‘Be nice!’.

He then announced the first act, an unknown band called The Charles Family. They came on and they performed three songs. The band consisted of a family of two brothers and two sisters. The youngest being about 12 years old, and the oldest about 18.

The presenter then came on again and announced that FreeFaller were next. They got a lot of cheers. They are a four-piece band consisting of Ollie (vocals and guitar), Dean (guitar), Gary (bass) and Rich (drummer). Some people, like myself, recognised Ollie from being a fan of Point Break a few years ago – he was the blond one! They also sung three songs, but got a much better reception from the crowd than the first act.
Next up was Jamelia. She got a lot of cheering and screaming for her, making it obvious that a lot of people had also gone to see her. She performed three songs. One was an album track, and the other two were her previous hits ‘Thankyou’ and ‘Superstar’. She wore a short black dress, and her two dancers were wearing similar. Mother was going to take a banner for her (not a nice one), as she was nasty to Peter in the past, but as he has made up with her she didn't. She did have a Peter Andre flag though and Jamelia was looking at it so mum waved it to her so she could see it! Jamelia gave a slight smile.

After a ten minute interval two people wearing black outfits with luminous pink outlines on them were spotted behind the blue screen. It was the Cheeky Girls! No one particularly wanted to see them, and when they came out, it was only to the amusement of the crowd as they were wearing outfits that made them look like Christina Aguilera wannabe's. They did a very big set, singing about six songs. Every time they announced a new song they were going to sing, it was to the dismay of the crowd and you could hear a big ‘Oh no!’ go around.
Eventually they ended on a remixed version of The Cheeky Song that seemed to last forever!. I think the biggest cheer of the day was heard when they left the stage!

There was another short interval when backstage workers started putting directors chairs on the stage with ‘Cheryl’, ‘ Sarah ’, ‘Nicola’ and ‘Nadine’ on them. The next act were Girls Aloud.

They came on and started by singing a cover of Girls On Film, which was also a B-Side to one of their singles.

Then Cheryl announced that Kimberley wasn’t going to be there because she was ill.

They then sung other hits ‘No Good Advice’, ‘Jump (For my love)’, ‘Sound of the Underground’ and the latest single ‘The Show’. They got a brilliant reception and managed to do really well despite them being one person down.

There was another ten minute interval and then Lemar came on the stage. He opened with a song off of his album, then performed his second single ‘50/50’. He then introduced his friend Marcus to the stage to play the guitar for an acoustic version of ‘I believe in a thing called Love’. A cover of The Darkness that Lemar performed and mixed it with ‘All my Life’, another cover by K-Ci and JoJo. He then ended with his debut single ‘Dance (With you)’. He got an equally good reception as Girls Aloud.

There was a slightly longer delay before the next act came on stage. The headlining act....PETER ANDRE!

The press photographers suddenly lurched forward, suddenly eager to get to the other side of the stage, until a human wall of security men stopped them. As soon as we looked over to where they were headed it was obvious why -Katie Price (Jordan) was standing there, just in front of the railing, ready to watch Peter.

Eventually he came on stage wearing a blue vest jacket thing that spelt ‘RARE’ on it across the top, and white combat style trousers with blue trimming. He came on stage to the Mysterious Girl music, and finally the crowd seemed to be alive. There was lots of singing and arm waving going on. He was also wearing sunglasses at this point.

He then introduced the next song he was going to sing as ‘Ooh La La La (Let’s go Dancing)’. Half way through the song he shouted out 'I like your Elton John glasses' and they got thrown on the stage, Peter gladly wore them and said ‘I love these, how much are they?’ then seemed a bit surprised when he was told it was only two pounds. They were bright blue, oversized and heart shaped. Katie looked at him and smiled.

He then gave a ‘I’m no Ricky Martin’ speech and went into ‘You Got Me Thinking’, doing his bum wiggling dancing which the crowd loved. He then went on to sing ‘All Cried Out’. Before he did this he turned to Katie, pointed at her and said to her ‘You’re beautiful’ which was instantly met by the girls behind us shoving forward, pushing us into the barrier, just so they could see her. Katie gave him a lovely big smile.

He talked a bit about the artists that we had seen that day and said that he thought Lemar was the best solo artist in Britain at the moment and that he is such a good singer. Some people shouted back at him, I guess saying that he is the best, and he paused for a second before smiling and saying 'Jamelia is good too!'.

He then announced that The Right Way was going to be part of a double-A side for the new single. He seemed more interested in singing this song and spent a lot of the time making eye contact with Katie and generally interacting with her. She seemed happy to be watching him and appeared to be enjoying it. Lots of little smiles from her to Peter and some of the time talking to fans nearby. She came across as very friendly and easy going and wasn't put out by the photographers trying to get pictures of her, she just ignored them.By this time the girls behind us had stopped pushing so much although some small children were pulled out of the crowd by the security people as they were being crushed. Peter looked down at one being carried off, and seemed concerned.

Peter mentioned about the critics saying Insania wouldn't work but they were wrong and we were there supporting him and that is what counts.

Peter then went off the stage for a few minutes, but carried on talking to the crowd. He said he just had to get something. Katie laughed. He came back on the stage wearing his jungle fleece and hat. He talked about the jungle and asked who had voted for him, before accusing us of lying when we shouted yes. He asked who we think should have won, and said he thought 'Katie should have won!' which lead to more smiles from her.

He spoke about told how Insania originated, the story of all his jungle friends being asleep and he was bored so wrote a song.

Then he sung Insania, and through the blue glasses back to the crowd.
By the time the song had finished Katie had gone backstage, the press had eased off and people seemed a lot happier being satisfied that they had seen a good show. Despite getting a bit crushed, and a bit wet in the rain it was a good concert and everyone enjoyed it.
